Arriva OpenSolaris! No, forse e` Linux…

Open SolarisCon un misto di piacere e curiosita` ho appena scoperto che Sun ha rilasciato una prima preview del Progetto Indiana. Essenzialmente si tratta di un interessante esperimento/tentativo di far somigliare, quanto piu` possibile, Open Solaris ad una “normale” distribuzione Linux. A tale scopo, tra l’altro, e` stato ingaggiato anche Ian Murdock, fondatore di Debian.

Il download della ISO, contenente un sia sistema live sia l’installer, qualora si decidesse di impiegare Open Solaris in via definitiva, puo` essere effettuato all’indirizzo:

Project Indiana milestone reached!

I’m very pleased to announce that the first milestone of Project Indiana is now available – called OpenSolaris Developer Preview.

It’s available for download at

http://dlc.sun.com/osol/indiana/downloads/current/in-preview.iso

This is an x86-based LiveCD install image, containing some new and emerging penSolaris technologies. This may result in instabilities that lead to system
panics or data corruption.

Among the features contained in this release are:

  • Single CD download, with LiveCD ‘try before you install’ capabilities
  • Caiman installer, with significantly improved installation experience
  • ZFS as the default filesystem
  • Image packaging system, with capabilities to pull packages fromnetwork repositories
  • GNU utilities in the default $PATH
  • bash as the default shell
  • GNOME 2.20 desktop environment
