As may times I said somewhere else, one of the advantages of Nokia’s Internet Tablets, on the old 770 as well on the young N810, is the extreme openess, being able to experiment and expand them, basicaly the opposite of what happens on the iPhone ;). And this is a good point for Nokia.
In the wait for my N810, and the release of N800′s firmware upgrade to IS2008 I decide do to some tests. One of the criticisms against to IT graphic interface is that it’s kinda too “constricted” and limited (you cannot move windows around, you cannot have more windows shown at once, etc.). I have to admit that’s (partly, at least) true, but the overall usability is overall more than acceptable (IMHO).
Anyway, one of Linux advantages, and thus of IT, is that “if you don’t like something, change it!”. And I have to admit that PenguinBait and Rodrigo Vivi INdT (Openbossa team), owners respectively of KDE port to IT and Mamona, which was recently released version 0.1.

In the first case it “only” a port of KDE to IT OS2007 platform, which can anyway turn on the light to what Internet Tablets can do and achieve: A LOT! ;)
Mamona, on the other hand, is a full distribution, using Enlightenment for the GUI part, which can be used as a full Maemo replacement. Release 0.1 is too young for a real-world use, but the bases are more than promising
As I said befire, Maemo’s overall usability is more than satisfying, but I think we’ve got a good question for Nokia (and Maemo’s developers? Perhaps): “why aren’t you using a more complex interface?”
A first and general, and absolutely valid, answer could be found in the easiness of a “simplified” interface. And, yes, Maemo GUI is easy to learn and use.
But this answer, from my point of view, should not satisfy an advanced user. I’d be more than happy to have a real window manager on my IT.
Kde could be kinda avid of system resources, that’s true. But what about Mamona/Enlightement? Resource consuption would’nt be so high (in the “E” style) and would bring to IT’s users a kinda exciting user experience. Just gave it a try and was amazed by the results!
Sadly enough, PenguinBait announced that KDE port won’t have further development. :(
On the opposite Mamona, despite being young, is actively developed. So, a huge “good luck!” :D
I think we’ll see something very interesting in the next few months.

Hi,
thanks for quote Mamona, but I’d like to clarify that I’m not owner of Mamona. Mamona is an INdT (Openbossa team) initiative. ;)
Best Regards
Thak you all for developing such a great piece of software! :D
What i like on maemo, is that on this small device with small screen, i don’t have to take care of managing my windows :)
Indeed. And that’s why I said Maemo’s overall usability is absolutely fine. Just sometimes would be nice to be able to go forward ;)
Don’t forget that until a few years ago 800×640 was a good resolution for many desktops, while today “standard” resolution is 1024×768. So beside physical size, IT’s resolution is pretty nice. :)
But, again, this is what I love of Linux and Linux-based devices: choice! :)
Development of KDE for Nokia has begun again!!!
I currently have a working copy of FULL KDE 3.5.8 with Koffice and CUP printing support. I know I said I was not going to further develop KDE, but I was wrong!! Happily I was wrong. This is way better than the original. Have Fun…
Anyone wanting to test, PM me at internettablettalk.com I am working on final version and will release once My n810 is in hand. It runs on 2008OS both n800/810 — Sorry 770 users!!
That email address has so much spam, PM me at ITT if you want to respond to this….
