GPE applications on OS2008

One of the most common complaints (beside not being a phone :-D ) about Internet Tablets is not being good a PIM. Perhaps Garnet will (soon) bring P3 (Palm PIM Power) to Maemo platform. In the meantime, have we got any solution at hand? Yes? No? Perhaps?

Well, from my (as usual) point of view the answer is definitely “yes!” . IT’s application base has grown a lot since the 770 eve.

GPE Calender on OS2008

As of now, my choice for my PIMing needings is GPE Calendar, along with GPE Contacts and GPE Summary applet. Just installed both on my N800 and, beside some minor and issue (more involved with what I’d expect to find, than to GPE’s functionalities) the result is more than good.

Contacts and events are easy enough to manage and the GUI makes a good use screen real estate. As far as I cans see some minor visual glitches ware aloso fixed in latest release.

I have only a few “complaints” about calendar:

  • It would be great to be able to add contacts to an event, and thus being able to open VOIP client with a click.
  • Using “zoom +/-” should act slightly differently, going from day->week->month->year, and not zooming on month before going to day. Not sure my explanation is clear enough but, well, give it a try! ;)
  • It would also be nice to have a tighter overall integration with other system applications and GPE tools themselves.

In short: a great suite. It worth a try (at least)! ;)

Did you tried GPE’s apps? Let’s comment it!

thing is that people not only wants pim, they want pim with easy sync to outlook, or whatever they prefer using.

hell, i would love for it to sync with my phone…

while opensync is available, its hardly simple to set up. someone needs to “box” all the opensync plugins in a easy to use ui (i would love to except i dont know the first thing about where to start, be it python or some other tool).

and no, going the route via google is not a solution imo. it would be better if one could use bluetooth or usb for it.

and going garnetvm is imo very close to admitting defeat…

Has the 5th week of the month been added yet? Need to have a recurring event on a 5th week. (check the calender!!! yest there are several months out of the year that has a 5th week.) Also the month selection buttons are garbled, that needs to be cleaned up.

My personal best PIM is still web browser + google calendar + SMS notifications… Available from anywhere and “simply works”.
Syncing with Exchange servers would also be nice – some organization use the M$ stuff and imposes these on their employees…

@turn_self_off: yes, being able to sync in an easier way with other devices would be a nice feature. I agree that using google as a “proxy” couldn’t be the right solution.

@AdmFubar: yes, there is no “5th” week, but you should use “last week” instead. Unless you won’t have a 6th week :D

What I would really like to see with GPE, is the alarm in GPE somehow integrated with the alarmd on the Nokia N8xx series, so any alarm you put in the Calendar will be in the standard alarm and also go off if/when the Nokia tablets are switched off.

Also Syncing is a major issue for me as well, it does need to be simplified for regular people.

I have some problems importing *.ics calendar files. The same files which have been working on 2007OS now give some error about “UTF-8 error”. I am puzzled.

Here’s another vote for simplifying the Sync process with Outlook. As much as i’d like to turf Outlook, right now it is the defacto standard in corporate environments. It would be *so* nice if I could turf my Palm and just carry my N800, but right now the palm is still needed for Outlook sync.

Sync needs to include Contacts, Calendar, and above all, NOTES. None of the current options consider that last one.

While I haven’t tried any outlook syncing, I’ve been syncing my N800 with GPE with Evolution (Outlook-like program) on Linux for quite some time now, and it’s actually pretty polished. I’ve linked to my instructions – which also include how to sync with KDE PIM programs. I’ve opted for “lots of detail” which should hopefully walk you through the process in a very step-by-step way.
