New FM Radio landed on OS2008

FM Radio alarm

One word review: “great!” Ok, was it too short? :D

I just installed updated FM Radio software and, folks, we’ve got another great piece of software here. FM Radio was a great deal on N800 already, but here we have a couple brand new features which really make this application a must-to-install-as-soon-as-possibile! :)

1: now you can use FM Radio as you alarm clock! Something I was really, really, really missing.

2: (doh! I never noticed this was already available on OS2007! :-) ) using radio station list downloader you can easily download tuning presets for your town! (select nation -> select region -> select town -> DONE!) So, no more nights spent trying to figure out which station you are listening at! :)

I really like your tablet background, where can I download it? Thanks! :D

    Thank you.
It’s the default background of one of the themes I’ve installed. Can’t grant, but I’ll tryy to mail it to you.

    Ciao,

Sorry to burst your bubbles, but #2 was already available in the latest update of OS2007. I can tell you for sure, that it had in the list, all the radio stations of Bucharest including the ones that had a normal or even a temporary license from ANRCTI (the Romanian FCC – National Romanian Association of Communication and IT) with the correct official name.
Otherwise, I’m looking forward to installing the very missed FM applet of OS2008.
The only thing missing is hardware support for DAB and DVB-H or DVB-T. If the N800/N810 were to have any of those Digital Radio and/or TV features, it would be the coolest device ever and a complete mobile replacement for a computer.

    Buona Fortuna,
    Razvan

The download of stations was available in OS2007 but the alarm is a great new feature!

Only “downside” to the radio app is that they didn’t update it’s look. As a result it looks all wrong on what really is a nice looking “desktop” for 2008. Nokia, make it skinnable!

  6. James scrive:

So does the radio let you use the speakers in the N800 rather than the headphones? (which you have to plug in to act as the aerial)

It’d be really good if someone produced a little N800 radio aerial that plugged into the headphone socket.

  7. Maddler scrive:

Doh! I’ve never noticed stations’ download on OS2008… ;)

About speakers: yes, you can use them instead of earphones, which will only act as an antenna.

  8. Maddler scrive:

@Ravan: yes, being able to use a DVB* device would be fantastic! Who knows… ;) USB host mode is already working for some devices after all…

Do you have a link? I can’t find it.

    This is great!
If only we could set internet radio stations as alarms too…

  12. Matyas scrive:

I propose to integrate FM and internet radio with Alarm Clock UI: at the end It is easy to use a consistent UI and not many different places to do the same thing.

  13. test scrive:

Download radio list is an ugly replacement for missing RDS support (it doesn’t help if I’m travelling). However it is better than nothing.

P.S. Does Nokia really hate RDS on their devices?

  14. David Dolphin scrive:

Does this allow you to set multiple alarms (or how easy would that be to hack on?)?

Also, is there an FM receiver in the N810 (I think I remember reading that it was missing, ors).

  15. Really, I refreshed the app list this morning (woke up at 7 o’clock and didn’t want to wake up my wife as well, so I just played with the N800 for another hour :D ), immediately installed. clock feature is great (and long-awaited..)!

Agree with test, the RDS function would be great and I guess it would not cost a lot more thatn a standard FM receiver

  16. Maddler scrive:

@David: no, you can olny configure single alarms.
